I hope this finds you safe and well. The MIoD exists to strengthen corporate governance in Myanmar and to support boards and board directors. We believe that the strength of our country is greatly enhanced by a strong private sector, strong governance, and strong institutions.
We will endeavour our upmost to provide normal programming and support for our members and the wider community and country in the coming days and months. Most of the offering will stay online at present.

Joint Session on Corporate Governance: MIoD and IMCC
5th February 2021 (3:00 pm – 4:30 pm)
This joint session hosted by the India Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and the Myanmar Institute of Directors and will feature speakers from Allen & Gledhill Myanmar and PwC Myanmar. The webinar will provide an overview of corporate governance in Myanmar, developments in the Myanmar legal and regulatory environment that impact company directors and MIoD programmes and activities to support directors. Finance for Directors course is a two-day online course which is aimed towards board directors who do not have a financial background and will cover the following topics:
- The director’s role and responsibilities in financial governance and reporting
- The life cycle of business financing, including diverse sources of company finances and their advantages and disadvantages.
- How to interpret financial statements, including how to analyse business/financial information and use of ratios.
- Governance of external financial reporting, including standards and practices.
- Director’s checklist: key questions that each director should ask and how to spot red flags.

We will be postponing the residential Director Certification Programme announced for 23-25 Feb to a later date with our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

This virtual event proposes to bring together Myanmar policy-makers, international experts, the private sector and civil society to share perspectives and discuss policy options to attract responsible investment that can help foster a sustainable recovery and contribute towards improving the lives of Myanmar people and meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Myanmar Institute of Directors (MIoD) is delighted to announce its new Chief Executive Officer Thiri Thant Mon, effective 01 July 2020. The MIoD would like to sincerely thank the outgoing CEO Ma Cherry Trivedi for her contributions.
Thiri brings over 20 years of experience with top international and Myanmar organisations. Before returning to Myanmar in 2013, she was a capital markets investment banker with Morgan Stanley in London helping institutional clients raise multi-billion-dollar financings. Upon her return, she was a member of the executive committee and Head of Corporate Development at Yoma Strategic Holdings. She founded Pegu Partners – previously named Sandanila – a capital and investment advisory firm, in 2015. Thiri started her career in 2000 in the US with Capital One.
Deeply passionate about education, empowerment and the transition of Myanmar into a vibrant member of the global community, Thiri supports initiatives related to corporate governance, institutional capacity building and attracting investment and intellectual capital into Myanmar. She is a Steering Committee Member of UK DFID’s Business for Shared Prosperity private sector development program. She also enables and shares voices and ideas of others by founding and organising TEDxYangon.
She serves as a member of the board of directors of Dawn Microfinance and the British Chambers of Commerce Myanmar, and is a trustee for several charities including the Yangon Heritage Trust and Turquoise Mountain Foundation, a Prince of Wales Charity. Thiri is fully bi-lingual in English and Myanmar having studied in the Myanmar education system through high school and also dedicated years learning Japanese, Spanish and Russian. Thiri holds a degree in Economics from William & Mary and an MBA from the London Business School.

The 25 June 2020 is a historic date for the Myanmar Institute of Directors, as we had our first Annual General Meeting.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the AGM was boardcasted via livestream to ensure physical distancing. The meeting was guided by COO Aung Myat Khaing, under the leadership of U Thura Ko Ko, who as was appointed interim Chair for the AGM. Members of MIoD casted their votes on resultions via proxy. In total, there were 10 resolutions, of which all were approved. This means that MIoD will welcome new board members, has now a new constitution, and reappoints the current auditor for future audits.
MIoD would like to express its thanks everyone involved to establish the Institute since its foundation in 2018. We are looking forward to continue promoting good corporate governance practices and business ethics in Myanmar.

Dear Valued Members,
I’d like to thank you for your continued support to MIoD during these unprecedented times of dealing with Covid-19 epidemic and its impact on your business and the economy. Such times allow us to re-look at our corporate governance structure especially in areas of sustainability and business continuity and construct plans to ensure the continuance of business under new paradigm.
We at MIoD is also at a juncture where we have elections coming up to move from Interim board to an elected board. I would like to extend my invitation to you, our members, to exercise your right to vote in this first-ever elections.
You would have received an email on the voting process and electronic voting means, and I would like to encourage you to vote.
As you are aware, my tenure as an Interim part-time CEO initially was for 6 months when I took on this position in December 2018. However, as per board support and encouragement, I have been at the helm of MIoD until the present time. During my tenure, MIoD has grown in membership and attendance in our training programs as well as events. With your support, MIoD is now well equipped with a capable secretariat team to continue to serve your needs in your journey in Governance and Executive Corporate Trainings.
I have been very fortunate to interact with all the members and training attendees and have the pleasure of sharing my knowledge in corporate governance as well as corporate financial operations.
However, I need to move on to pursue my passion as a Mergers and Acquisition Advisor/Banker and focus my attention on other ventures. Due to this reason, I will be stepping down from MIoD CEO position at the end of June 2020.
MIoD has advertised for a CEO position and I would like to encourage you to assist us in recommending candidates that have good experience and passion to carry the work of MIOD forward.
I will continue to support MIOD and look forward to interacting with all of you soon either via events or training where I will continue to teach.

We would like to let you know that we are postponing or utilising online resources for all our trainings and events for the month of March and April 2020.
As more and more companies recommend that employees videoconference or work from home rather than meet face-to-face, we felt it was our duty to extend the same protections to our board, stakeholders and members during this uncertain period, while we are still learning and adapting to new ways of interacting and operating events responsibly given the public health crisis we are facing today with the Covid-19 situation.
Based on Myanmar government’s new measures and in a time of social distancing and isolation, the spirit of community is more important than ever. If we cannot meet in person, MIOD will work to bring our community together in other ways utilising technology. At MIOD we are embracing the coming months as an opportunity for exploring the new ideas we don’t always have time to pursue when we are producing an action-packed calendar of events and trainings.

Additionally, I have instructed the staff to create a rotational schedule of working from home and attending the office to ensure that there is always someone at MIOD office to address our members’ issues and concerns.
