Professor Dr. Aung Tun Thet

Professor Dr. Aung Tun Thet is a Founding Patron of the Myanmar Institute of Directors (MIoD). He has held a distinguished career spanning academia, public service, international organisations, business, and economic policy.

He currently serves as an Independent Director of Ayeyarwady Bank and as an Advisor to the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI). He also holds various academic and advisory positions, including Distinguished Professor at Shan State Buddhist University, Honorary Professor at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and Honorary Professor at Dhurakij Pundit University, Thailand. He is also a Research Professor at Kyung Hee University, Korea, an Honorary Professor at Yangon University of Economics and Kunming University, China, a Senior Research Advisor at the Myanmar Studies Center, and a Senior Advisor at an economic research and development institute in Thailand.

Professor Dr. Aung Tun Thet has held several prominent positions in Myanmar and international organisations. From 2010 to 2025, he served as an Economic Advisor to the President of Myanmar. He was also a Member of the Myanmar Investment Commission (2010–2020) and a Member of the Peace Commission (2015–2020).

Previously, he served as a Senior Advisor at the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office in Yangon (2008–2010) and as a Principal Officer at the United Nations System Staff College in Turin, Italy (2000–2008). From 1992 to 2000, he was a Senior Advisor at UNICEF in New York. Earlier in his career, he served as Director General of the Department of Planning and Statistics, Ministry of Health (1979–1992) and held an academic position in the Department of Commerce at the University of Economics from 1966 to 1979.

Professor Dr. Aung Tun Thet holds a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) from Yangon University of Economics, a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies from Brighton, UK, an M.Sc. from the University of Warwick, UK, and a Ph.D. from UMIST, UK. He also completed a Post-doctoral Fellowship in Germany. In addition, he holds an Honorary Doctorate from Yangon University of Economics and a Diploma/qualification in Management Development from the UK.
