Message from U Aung Zaw Naing, Founding Chair of MIoD’s Board of Directors

President Image

We are proud to have launched the Myanmar Institute of Directors, the first independent, private sector-led organisation to promote corporate governance standards and practices in the country.

All too often, a good business with great market potential is held back by poor management and corporate structures, or a lack of proper controls and systems. This is especially true where companies have grown out of family businesses, which play a critical role in the Myanmar economy. Enhancing our corporate governance structures and practices is how we can overcome these challenges and realise our full potential.

MIoD’s vision is to be a pioneering organisation advancing corporate governance standards in Myanmar and supporting the professional development of directors. We aim to produce a pool of well-qualified directors to serve on the boards of Myanmar companies.

This is a significant step in Myanmar’s ongoing market reforms and sends a strong signal to the global business community the country’s commitment to good governance and responsible business.

MIoD delivers workshops and seminars on important governance topics through our Learning Series program. These courses will help equip company directors with the relevant knowledge and tools to make necessary corporate governance reforms at their companies. We also offer a Myanmar Director Certification Program, which not only informs directors of the latest corporate governance trends but also teaches them how to manage board discussions and deliberations.

In addition to training, the institute also aims to share best practices and influence policies through seminars and publications. The institute works on making board directorship more professional and serves as a peer exchange and networking platform.

We all want to build businesses that continue to grow bigger and last for generations. To do that, we must work together, share our lessons, and adopt good corporate governance standards and practices. That is the best way to support the sustainable development of our beautiful country’s private sector.

Sincerely,

Aung Zaw Naing
Chair of MIoD
